Fanmixes: Me Against the World & Good Monsters
Hello and welcome to the Third Day of Dark Angel. I'm using LJ's scheduled posting to publish this entry, so forgive me if anything looks wonky~ ♥
I'm granting two wishes, both fanmixes. I hope the recipients like them.
Caveat: I'm sure a few of you know me by now, but any and all pithy/callous commentary has no bearing on the absolute love in my heart for this series (or anything I summarize/mix/whatever.)

H-1 fanmix. ben/alec, set based around an au universe that ben didn't die and was taken back to Manticore where he was brought back, but escaped during the fire and meets his twin along with a few life lessons along the way.
I decided to make this mix at the very last minute, and it was something of a challenge. See, I'd already sort of done this, albeit for my own fanfic. Not to mention I'd already decided to grant the Alec fanmix wish. So the big challenge here was to get the same feelings across without repeating songs. @__@ I'll let you decide how well I did.
1. Sigur Rós - Ný Batteri
Confession: my husband might be the biggest Sigur Ros fan on the planet. It makes him a handy resource. For instance, this song is about being the subject of heinous tests! It's soft and surreal, like Ben when he's under the knife! Haha, I kid to mask my TEARS OF ABJECT HORROR.
2. Sneaker Pimps - Lightning Field
Manticore tries to break Ben once more. He says, bring it.
3. Morcheeba - A Military Coup
FIRE! Everybody out of the secret base!
4. Röyksopp - A Higher Place
Hide your daughters (and your teeth) -- friendly neighborhood freelance dentist Ben is back in town. He's a little fucked in the head, though, searching for a safe space to sort things out. Get it? Get it?! A HIGHer PLACE? *dodges fruit*
5. El-P - Poisenville Kids No Wins/ Reprise (This Must Be Our Time)
Seattle is such a shit-hole, seriously, why do we live here? (This is mostly here for ambience, because all the other songs are just people blabbing about their feelings on emotional roller coasters. FUN FACT: at this point, I've described Seattle with three different pieces.)
6. Caleb Kane - Go Mad
Yeah, Seattle and Ben don't really mix. It doesn't help that he has hang-ups about virtually everything in it.
7. Murder By Death - Rumbrave
A wild Alec appears, and he just does not give a fuck. He's not super keen on Ben running around unsupervised, especially because it didn't go so well last time. Ben would revert back to his old ways, but Alec tells him about his fencing business, so they become a dynamic duo. (Sidenote: this song is actually, above all else, my personal head-canon call for Dean Winchester. So much, it was hard for me to part with it. OTOH, I will probably never finish the epic SPN FST in my brain, so Dean was kind enough to let Alec borrow his theme.)
8. Breaking Benjamin - Had Enough
It started innocently enough. Like, "want some coffee?" / "I hate coffee." / "FUCK YOU, SERIAL KILLER." … Well, that escalated quickly.
9. Matchbox Twenty - Long Day
JUST KIDDING YOU'RE ALL RIGHT. No seriously, I like the whole "can't get myself to go away," "I shouldn't feel this way," and "I'm sorry about the attitude, but no one else would take this shit from me." All very true, both of you. Ben and Alec start to realize that they're better together. Plus, I'm sure every day is a long day for transgenics these days.
10. Radical Face - Haunted
Between Ben's PTSD and criminal record, Alec decides they should get the hell outta Dodge.
11. Jars of Clay - Good Monsters
Transgenics have the ability to do good. Alec and Ben decide to take a page from Max's book and make the world a better place.
12. Cloud Cult - Forces of the Unseen
As for what they're doing? I like to imagine them traveling the globe, rescuing people from corrupt corporate executives, bringing down murderers, and toppling ruthless military regimes with their own hands.
13. Bruce Cockburn - Strange Waters
This bond of kinship is getting stronger, fiercer, and … a little unfamiliar. Ben wants to know what Alec is doing to him. Alec says, dude, it might be the beginning of a healthy relationship. They've been through some hell -- okay, a lot of hell in Ben's case -- but they're recovering together.
14. Onelinedrawing - Softbelly
AND BY "RECOVERING," I MEAN "TOTALLY BONING." ……. It occurs to me now that perhaps the "/" up there wasn't meant to imply a sexual relationship between the clones. If this is the case, I am sorry; I have shamed us both. Just pretend Alec is doing cocaine or something instead.
15. Jars of Clay - Water Under the Bridge
And a soft, easygoing epilogue. Sorry for the double-tap with Jars of Clay, but this is a good coda to the mix, really piling on the water imagery from above, too. Also, it's about sticking together no matter what comes your way.

Wish D-1: an Alec Fanmix.
Of the three I've done recently, this mix was the hardest. It didn't help that I'd basically blown my load on other mixes. I tried my best, though, even if I can't seem to decide if my mixes are background noise, or outright what the characters are thinking. Maybe a bit of both?
Regardless, no personal fanon in this mix. (Well, not much, anyway.)

1. Low - Murderer
Life as a super-soldier assassin. Alec isn't at all bitter about having to spend months under psychiatric evaluation, either. Really, he's not!
2. Nick Cave - Red Right Hand
Manticore seems like an all right kind of place -- until you see it from the outside, and then it isn't. It really, really isn't.
3. Chopin - Etude in E Major Op.10 No. 3
NO WAIT COME BACK. It's not a cheap shot, I swear! It's a metaphor for Alec-as-Lehane, and how he completely changes for his role. Also, a notably different sound from the rest of the mix. See? I told you it wasn't a cheap shot. ... DON'T LOOK AT ME.
4. The Paper Kites - Bloom
On a game-changing away mission, Alec reawakens as Lehane and finds love. He kind of maybe has thoughts of another life, of another opportunity, and starts questioning some things.
5. Roy Buchanan - Sweet Dreams
It doesn't go well. (I love the guitar work here, but I also love the play on words in this context.)
6. Two Gallants - Age of Assassins
This is a very deliberate choice for after Rachel, when Alec is punished and "re-educated" into forgetting everything about her. It's erratic, desperate, and confounded. ... No, you're the hipster, hipster.
7. Ugress - Numb
Alec meets Max. She's not impressed. He doesn't care; he's got orders and a reputation to uphold.
8. Calexico - Fractured Air (Tornado Watch)
Max upheaves Manticore and Alec's entire life goes along for the ride. He hightails it.
9. Thievery Corporation - Liberation Front
Alec lands in Seattle proper, wanting both to lay low and flex his newly freed muscles. (Also, I love both the band name and song title in this context.)
10. Sick Puppies - You're Going Down
Monty Cora has got some Firaga for you, bitch.
11. Bruce Springsteen - Meeting Across the River
Or, a couple of the sketchy means Alec uses to obtain funds. He's the leading importer of whatever it is you're looking for!
12. 2Pac - Me Against the World
It's not all sunshine and rainbows, though. Alec gets himself into a fair bit of trouble -- and let's not even talk about authorities harassing him about Ben's crimes, okay? At the end of all things, Alec's looking out for Numero Uno and no one else, got it?
13. Ben Folds - Mess
"I'm always all right," and other patented Alec Lies.
14. Toad the Wet Sprocket - Something to Say
Max→Alec, wherein Max is also standing in for the other members of the gang. Gang of freaks and fugitives loves each other, after all. T__T
15. Clifford Gilberto - The 10th Victim
GO TEAM TRANSGENICS, and other nocturnal adventures.
16. Steve Earle - The Revolution Starts...
Terminal City.
You know what's awesome? Music is awesome.
