Suggestion box

I hope to keep things rolling (actively) throughout the year, so please use this time to offer suggestions. What do you want to see here on [livejournal.com profile] jam_pony_fic? What activities would you participate in? What challenges have you seen in other fandoms, comms that you think might work here?

Throwing out a few ideas to discuss - a quarterly newsletter? A Dark Angel bingo? A fic exchange?

((Side note, I'm back at work tomorrow and I think I'm sick - though I have to work so I'm ignoring it! This just means I might be a little slow in replying))

A suggestion box, how wonderful. I'm sure Normal would really appreciate that.

How about a suggestion box challenge post, cracky notes as prompts left anonymously. Each prompt has to be written like a character from DA wrote it and to fill that prompt...is a mitzve? Eh, how about something more...I dunno. Maybe they have to write it from that character's POV or dedicate it to the character. I'm pulling ideas out of my ass here, the option of fill requirements is up to you.

[identity profile] i-want-2.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe in a reverse, how about an anonymous confessional box, where people post a single anonymous line of a character's confession and people write the story behind it as a response.

[identity profile] dollarformyname.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Both of those sound really interesting. I'm really digging the character's POV aspect of it; that's awesome. I'll discuss it with [livejournal.com profile] denyce and we'll see what we come up with; maybe get something set up within the next month or so. If you get anymore ideas that expand on it, though, definitely feel free to throw 'em at us. Thank you for suggesting it!

Were you a record producer in a past life? That sounds like something they'd say before canning someone's ass. LOL. I had the second part of the first challenge idea when I woke up, I just forgot it like a dumbass.

[identity profile] dollarformyname.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Um, what? I'm not really sure what I said wrong? I'm just thinking up details about how to work it that I'd like to bounce off the other mod before going ahead with it, and I've got a few already because I really do like the idea.

I'm really sorry if I offended you somehow.

[identity profile] i-want-2.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing, honey, it's not offensive. You're words were funny, in fact. That way you said it is how they shmooze people they want to keep around, but not really. I apologize for making you think that.

[identity profile] dollarformyname.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's okay. I guess I do have a sorta "diplomatic tone" when I'm talking to new people and stuff. XP

I bet you could do a killer Bill Lumbergh impression.

Bingo sounds good, as does the newsletter. Comment-fic memes are fun too.

Not sure if anyone has seen the fancake comm on DW, but they collect recs of good fic. Each month has a theme and people rec fic (new or old) that fits the theme. There it's for any fandom, but if people liked the general idea, I'm sure it could be adapted to work for DA.

[identity profile] dollarformyname.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, we're definitely planning to throw up a comment-fic meme within the next few months, once we get a few other things set up. I LOVE those memes a ridiculous amount. ;D

I haven't seen that comm (maybe [livejournal.com profile] denyce has, though), but I've seen a few themed rec comms around LJ. Very cool idea that maybe we could work in here. Do you mind sharing a link so I can check out how that one's run? Thanks so much for the suggestions!

A link to fancake (http://fancake.dreamwidth.org/profile).

Another thought occurred when I saw the reverse big bang suggestion below. It reminded me of a challenge a couple of years ago (I can't remember for definite which fandom, possibly Leverage, and I've never seen it done again since but I seem to remember it came up with a bunch of fics at the time). There were a selection of visual prompts left that anyone could pick one (or multiples) to write to - I think expectation was to write between 1000 and 5000 words per prompt chosen for the most part. The visual prompts were a mix of screencaps and random photos and art. Anyone could claim any of them - so multiple people could write to each prompt and interpret it in their own way.

Look forward to seeing what ideas come out of this - I'm certainly looking for reasons to write in the coming year. ;D

Awesome! Thank you for the link!

Okay, I'm definitely intrigued by that. So it'd sort of be like a comment-fic meme, but the prompts are art/pics instead of written, with somewhat higher word count expectations? That would be amazing. I'm totally on board with things that don't have hard deadlines, too, 'cause deadlines are not my friend. ;) Fantastic suggestion! All the cookies for youuuu.

I'm a big fan of the SPN reverse bang, so maybe something like that? Or a drabble meme, where you can respond to prompts with max. 100 words? Or a round robin, when enough people are online? I also love the song titles thing I saw around, where you have to write shorts (up to 500 words) for the first 10 songs that come up in your iTunes/Spotify/Whatever. Just some suggestions :) I like i_want_2's idea of writing as the characters too <3

[identity profile] dollarformyname.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Haha. Great minds think alike. I was talking about a DA reversebang with [livejournal.com profile] denyce not too long ago. It's definitely something I want to try to work in here, or the fandom in general.

Round robins are a lot of fun. Hopefully as we attempt to garner more interest and get more active members we can work one in.

And the song title thing sounds awesome! I'm gonna add that to our list of challenges we'll be trying to put on this year. Thank you kindly for all the suggestions!

I've always thought that I would like to see a DA newsletter. I receive NL from other fandoms, and it's good 'cause if you don't have much time you just need to read the NL and choose whatever you like best, were it fanfictions or vids or news abt the actors and so on.

Also prompts and comment-fics sound good: we could take inspiration from [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic, with a different theme fics must focus on every time. It could be a weekly appointement and one can answer the prompt either with a comment fic or with a long-ish fan-fiction.

Not sure if anyone has seen the fancake comm on DW, but they collect recs of good fic. Each month has a theme and people rec fic (new or old) that fits the theme. There it's for any fandom, but if people liked the general idea, I'm sure it could be adapted to work for DA.

I didn't know abt it, but it seems like a very good idea. We could include videos or metas or everything we like in the recs as well, as long as they fit the monthly theme.

I'm working out a newsletter setup right now, 'cause those are so so useful, I agree. And yeah, themed comment-fic memes are good times; can't wait to get one going. :D Though I'm not familiar with the weekly appointment thing? I'll have to check that out, so thank you for the comm link.

I'm liking the themed rec idea a lot, too. So many wonderful suggestions. We're definitely gonna explore that one and try to work it in. Thanks so much for the input!

And thank you for the wonderful idea of a suggestion box. I'd like to see this community explode with life, lol.

And yeah, themed comment-fic memes are good times; can't wait to get one going. :D Though I'm not familiar with the weekly appointment thing? I'll have to check that out,

Maybe I didn't made myself clear, but if you check the community out you'll see that it's a daily prompt kind of community: everyday there's a different theme, bar friday and on weekends. I don't think a daily prompt thing could work in this fandom - too small for this - but maybe a weekly themed comment-fic meme could. Or a monthly one.

I'm just talking theoretically though, 'cause I usually just leave prompts over [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic, so I don't know a thing about how to organize something like that, sorry :P

[identity profile] dollarformyname.livejournal.com 2012-01-05 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I get what you're saying now, after checking the comm. I'm digging the idea a lot! Mostly it appeals to me because it seems pretty hassle-free: no obligations or deadlines. \o/ Also, it gave me some other little ideas, so thank you again!

[identity profile] pat-san.livejournal.com 2012-01-05 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad to hear that, and you're welcome ^__-

Sorry I couldn't reply earlier... But what about fanart challenges?

[identity profile] dollarformyname.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone above suggested a reversebang, which I'm definitely all for. And someone else mentioned doing something like a comment-fic meme, but with art/pic prompts and higher word counts. What do you think of those ideas?

Do you know of any other fanart challenges in other fandoms that we could implement here? 'Cause if so: *grabby hands* I'd love for fanartists to have more opportunities to shine. :D

[identity profile] classiczeppelin.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm... *tapping chin* I love the comment-fic meme idea, but you should probably put a limit on the amount of entries the community receives. The more you have, the longer it will take to fill them... and some might not get filled at all.

Art/pic prompts? Hell yeah. I do fanart myself with photos run through my editing software. (check my account if you're curious, I just started posting my stuff online.)

Higher word count? Maybe. For me, whatever I write comes out at a certain number of words, and then I can't expand upon it without the writing quality going bad. I don't know if that's normal for anyone else, but it is for me. :D

Fanart challenges, huh? ...I saw one person on LJ with her/his friends, and they gave a character, a word, a feeling, and a color and then they had to follow it as closely as possible. I think you could do that.

[identity profile] dollarformyname.livejournal.com 2012-01-05 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
I think the comment-fic meme with pic prompts should be pretty laid-back after some thought. Probably gonna just run it like a regular one, for the most part, and forget about min. word counts and all that. Easier on all of us, right? :)

I like that idea! Oh, man, I do that to myself--just pull up some word generators and find a noun, an adjective or two, a color, and go to town. I didn't even think of making it into a whole challenge. WIN.

Thank youuuu!

[identity profile] classiczeppelin.livejournal.com 2012-01-05 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL. Happy to help! :D
