A/N 2: This was never meant to be cut in two parts, it was only gonna be a one-shot. However, seeing as it's due in... 26 minutes, and it's only half done... Your gonna get it in two parts. Very sorry! The day I had planned on writing, was the day my boss had planned on me working. :( But, i have tomorrow off! And the second half will be finished and posted then! ;) Also, not yet beta'ed, but it will be for the week is through!
Summary: Max has finally figured what she wants, now she gotta figure out how to go about getting it.
“Now wait a minute.” Alec sat his drink back down on the bar and looked at Biggs with confusion. “You’re telling me you think Back in Black is the best song AC/DC ever made?”
“Well, yeah. Everyone knows that.”
“Nah, man. That’s just because it was popular and everyone has heard it. That doesn’t make it the best.”
“So what’s your favorite then. No, wait. Let me guess.” Biggs leaned back on the bar beside Alec and looked up toward the ceiling in mock concentration, before snapping his fingers. “I got it! ‘Bad Boy Boogie’, right?”
“How’d you figure it out?” Alec laughed, reaching down to answer the vibrating phone out of his pocket.
“Hello?”
“Alec.” The name was said quietly, putting Alec on alert. Biggs noticed his friend’s tense stance and immediately started calculating possible exits, trying to figure out what the trouble was.
“Yeah?”
The line was quiet for a few seconds, except for the faint sounds of breathing. “I need you Alec.” The statement was made as almost a desperate plea, and with it came recognition of who had called him.
“Max, what’s wrong? Are you okay?” He didn’t try to hide the concern obvious in his voice. His head was simply swarming with mind numbingly, painful scenarios of what could be wrong. Did the cult attack? Could Lydecker have found her? Had there been an accident? The thought of what might have happened to her. . . Was just too much to bear.
Things had only recently started going good between them. It started a few days after she had finally come clean with Logan. The poor guy had been thrilled, assuming she was ready to get back together and concentrate on tracking down the cure. Much to both his - and Alec’s - surprise, she instead tried to explain as gently as possible that while she still wanted to ‘keep in touch’, their time had come and gone. She also told him that while she still cared for him, as a friend, she no longer felt ‘that way’ about him, and wasn’t entirely sure if she ever really did, or if it had been more of a desire for the normalcy a relationship with him would have brought. Alec had provided a willing ear, and a strong friendship had started to bloom between them. Of course, she had no idea about his true feelings for her.
The idea that something might have already happened and she would never even know made his chest ache.
Alec held his breathe as he waited for an answer, only hoping that he wasn’t already too late.
“The, uh . . . I can’t get the kitchen sink to drain.”
All the air rushed out of his lungs. *The sink? All that over a freaking sink?* He would have laughed, if he didn’t feel the need to reach through the telephone and strangle her. Pissed would be an understatement to what he felt.
Here he had been, terrorized out of his mind that she was dying, or worse, and she had a busted sink. How completely typical. Alec wanted to yell at her for scaring him like that, but knew it was a waste of time. Besides, how was she to know what he had thought?
“And I need to know this because . . . ”
She hesitated before answering. “Well, you’re a guy . . . and I thought that all guys knew how to, you know, do guy things.”
He snorted. Of course she wanted him to fix it. What else did he expect? He was her good buddy Alec. Mr. Help you steal gas for a motorcycle he was barely allowed to look at, let alone drive. Mr. Go ahead and cry on my shoulder, I love the look of fresh snot on my T-shirts. So, why not Mr. Plumber?
Hell, why was he even thinking that. He knew what his answer would be the second she said his name. No matter the circumstance, spending time with Max, was still spending time with Max.
“Yeah, alright, I’ll be there in a bit” Alec rolled his eyes at just how completely whipped he really was and fought the urge to sigh. “But you owe me!”
“You got it. Next time you got a hangnail that just wont go away, I’m your girl. See ya then”
I’m your girl... Alec smiled sadly as he clicked the phone shut. If only that were true.
“So, what’s the word? Everything alright?”
Alec had almost forgotten Biggs was standing there beside him. The Transgenic was still a bit tense, but had relaxed some at watching the obvious casual way the conversation had ended. It there was a real emergency, Alec’s body language and voice would have let him know. As it looked now, there had simply been a false alarm.
“Nothing big. Max just needs a favor, so I’ve just got to run.” Alec tipped his head back and finished the last few drops that was left of his scotch, before sliding it back on the bar.
“Need a hand with anything?” Biggs asked.
“Nah man, but thanks.” Alec slapped his hand against his friends shoulder. “Take it easy.”
Biggs nodded at him and slapped him back. “You too. See you at work.”
As Alec got a few steps away, he suddenly remembered their earlier conversation and turned back to tell Biggs. “She’s got balls.”
In reply Biggs frowned and looked at him in confusion. “What?’
“She’s Got Balls.” He repeated, before adding:
“My favorite song. By AC/DC.”
Biggs chuckled as he watched Alec make his way through the crowd of people and out the door.
No doubt about it, his friend had it bad.
