"Why don’t you wise up? Start by covering up that barcode.”

Max reached and poked at the piece of DNA engineering on display.

He shied away, the twitch mistaken for annoyance. The verbal squabbling was obviously about to take a turn to the physical. Head slapping was acceptable, hits to the shoulder fine. Yet something ran sharp and cold through his blood as her fingers touched the back of his neck. He wasn’t sure if it was some sort of faint fragment of memory from Manticore, or a strange instinct. He just did not want her hands near his neck.
